Hey, it’s Nick with Growmeo. In this video, I’m going to go over Google Ads image extensions, why you should use them, and how to add them to your ads. Let’s get started.

So, what are image extensions?

Image extensions allow you to show an image along with your text ads. These should not be confused with your logo image or images you might add to display campaigns or your performance max campaigns. These are a little different. You can see examples of image extensions right now. They’re inside the blue boxes. And yes, Pooper Scooper is a real service.

So, if you can’t stomach doing this yourself, you have options. Apparently, a good rule of thumb is to use at least four images for your ads. You can certainly create more, but you want to give Google different images and options for Google to choose from. And unfortunately, one last thing, Google determines when your image ad extensions actually get shown.

We don’t have that control. Google determines if and when an image extension gets shown and which images get shown.

Benefits Of Image Extensions In Google Ads

So, why should you use image extensions in your ads?

First, they’re visually more appealing than just plain old text. They also increase ad real estate, both of which can draw people towards your ads, which is obviously a good thing. And in turn, this can improve your click-through rates, which is also a good thing as obviously the goal of running ads is to generate relevant traffic that ultimately converts. Using image extensions for your ads is an absolute must and I’ll show you how to do that right now. Okay, so here we are in a Google Ads account.

How To Add Image Extensions In Google Ads

How the heck did we get here?

Over on the left nav under assets, click the assets button and then click images. And that will isolate all the assets to just the image only assets. This account already has images which is why you see them here. If you haven’t uploaded them yet, this section will be blank.

How do you add images?

We add them at the campaign level. So click this blue plus button. You can select if you want the images to be shown potentially for all your campaigns, you can select all of them doing that. Or if you want to just pick individual campaigns, click the ones you want and then press done. And then that will take you to this screen.

And this is where we’re going to start to upload images. Keep in mind that for these images, you read this right here. Google doesn’t like overlays or text in these images. Just pictures only. No text. So how do we add them? Click on the images button. There’s several different ways that you can do this. Move my face out of the way.

Sometimes Google will automatically suggest options for you. In this case, there are no suggestions. If you have already uploaded images to your account, you can click on asset library. And in this particular case, there’s all these images that have already been uploaded to the account.

You can also use Google’s AI image generator. And in this section, you can just plug in some prompts, hit create, and then Google will create some ad options for you. If you already have images on your computer that you want to upload, click upload and then the upload from computer option.

And wherever your images are on your computer, select those and they will show up here. Another cool way is through your website or social media. Click on that button and you’ll see a URL field where you can actually plug in the URL. It’s typically your website is where I would start and Google will crawl your website in addition to your social media channels as well. So check this out.

So we’re going to use pets smart as an example – petsmart.com and then Google has gone ahead and found some options for you, populates these and you can select from any of those. And then if you see down here, there’s also an option where Google believes it’s found social media profiles for Instagram and Facebook. So you can hit scan and Google will actually scan the Instagram account if it can find it and offer more suggestions.

Now, you can add up to 20 and there are a couple different sizes.

So, how do you add them?

Choosing Different Image Sources

Let’s pick an example. If you want to add this, hit select. And then you can see that populate down here. And Google also did something. It turned one image into two. Why did it do that? Because there’s two different sizes that you can add.

And Google is essentially guessing on the square ad what it could possibly look like.

You don’t have to accept it though. Here’s what you can do. Click on the pencil icon. Here’s the two sizes. This one and then if you click over here, you get the square option. So, right now they’re both checked. Let’s say for and you can move them.

Let’s say you didn’t want to use the square one just the way it was. You want to move it slightly over or do a little bit more of a closeup. You can move it. If the image was bigger, you could actually make this square smaller. But as it stands right now with this blue check mark, what this means is Google is going to use the square image and then a bigger image, more of a rectangle.

And you can again move that left and right. And if it was a bigger image, you could actually make it smaller like this. Actually, you can in this case. And if you wanted to move it around, you could. Now, you don’t have to select them all.

Let’s say you just wanted to select the square. Unselect that option. And then select one ratio down here. And you can see that changed. It’s no longer using the rectangle. It’s just using the square image. And everything down in this section as you populate and select more, you’ll see that they’ll continue to populate down there. But you, it’s always a good idea to double check to see if Google is going to crop your image and use a crop version that you may not want to show.

For example, this doesn’t look like this is one that we want to show. So, we can click on it and either edit it or we can go back to the results. And if we know just by looking at we don’t want it, we can just X out of it. And then once you find all the images that you want to add, press save here.

There’s also a free stock image. So if you wanted to search the free stock image database, you can do that by plugging in some keywords in here.

Let’s plug in woman with her dog. And then you’ll get all sorts of images that you could possibly use as well. And that is how you add images to your search campaigns in Google Ads.

Thanks for watching.
