How to Find Negative Keywords in the Google Ads Search Query Report

Hey everyone. In this video, I’m going to show you a trick that I use sometimes when I’m going through the search query report and trying to find search queries that I want to add as negatives.

Oftentimes what we do is we’ll open up the search query report and we’ll just kind of start mainly going through and looking for potential negatives.

Use a Filter to Find Potential Negative Keywords

If we think of it in a different way, we can add a filter. A filter where you actually add the keywords that you want your ads to show up for and you do a filter for does not contain.

In this example, this is for a fencing company. This fencing company only wants ads to show up if it’s using the word fence.

Any keyword or search query that does not include the word fence or fencing or a misspelling of that, we want to add as a negative keyword.

How to Add a Filter in the Search Query Report

Let me show you. If you don’t know how to add a filter, you can click add a filter here and it will come up with options.

I’ve already set this up. So what I’ve selected is, here’s your options, contains, does not contain, and several others. What you want to do is you want to start off and select does not contain.

And then under the value here, what you want to add are the words or the phrases that are good and that are okay.

You want your ads to potentially show up for search queries that include these terms. So for example, again, this is a fencing company, so we’re using fence, fencing, and a common misspelling that I see.

Review Search Queries That Do Not Contain Your Approved Terms

and then once we apply that what’s going to happen is we’re going to get a list of search queries of everything that does not contain fence fencing or other misspellings so these would be candidates to exclude.

And as you can see, none of these search queries contain the word fence, fencing, or other misspellings. And as you scroll down, you can see there’s quite a few in this particular account.

So these are all candidates for negative keywords. And once you review this, my recommendation is always to just be sure, go down and review all the keywords.

Add Search Queries as Negative Keywords in Bulk

and then in bulk you can select all and then right here you can add as a negative keyword. This is a nice little trick for those accounts where you they’re a little bit more straightforward in terms of the service they provide.

Create a List of Approved Words

And you can create a list of what I call approved words. And those approved words would be what you would put here in the value field, and then ensure that you check does not contain.
